Is your teen experiencing significant stress? Do they seem less happy than they used to be? Are they struggling with an eating disorder or suspected substance use?  Do they have big emotions and experience difficulty managing those emotions effectively?

Many of us recall our teenage years as a mix of exciting freedom and overwhelming stress. With skyrocketing hormones teens often feel emotionally out of control while grappling with academic pressures and the desire to fit into social circles. This combination of stressors can profoundly affect their mental health and overall well-being.

Effective Therapy Approaches for Teens

For teens facing mental health challenges, two particularly effective therapeutic approaches are Dialectical Behavior Therapy (Thrive Detroit practices DBT-inspired) and prolonged trauma exposure therapy. Here’s a brief overview of different types of therapy that may benefit your teen:

  • Individual Therapy: In these private sessions, therapists often utilize DBT-inspired treatment to help teens learn skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness, fostering a deeper understanding of their thoughts and feelings.
  • Group Therapy: Group therapy can be particularly impactful, allowing teens to connect with peers facing similar challenges. Our groups consist of individuals aged 13-17, guided by a facilitator who fosters discussion and shared learning.
  • Family Therapy: In this setting, teens attend sessions with parents and sometimes siblings. Family therapy can enhance communication, promote understanding, and strengthen relationships within the family.
